Global Language Program Deadline for 2008-9 Global Language program is Friday, May 30th. (After May 30th, prices will increase and can only be done directly through Discovery Language Program.) The PTA sponsors this optional self-funded program to Lyon students in first and second grade and all Pleasant Ridge Students. We are happy to announce that as of the fall of 2007 we offer our program through Discovery Language Programs. The decision to hire Discovery is a change from our previously PTA -administered program and was made for a number of reasons. While the recent survey of the Global Language program indicated that program and teacher satisfaction was high, the required time, experience, and energy to administer this program with high satisfaction levels is just beyond what we should be asking from annually changing PTA parent volunteers. These issues are minimized with a professionally managed program, such as Discovery. Of added benefit is a consistent curriculum and materials not only from classroom to classroom, but also from year to year and from Lyon to Pleasant Ridge. Discovery Language Programs was selected from several different foreign language service providers we reviewed. It is an educational organization that has been providing foreign language enrichment programs to students attending preschool, elementary school and junior high school since 1992. Their natural approach to teaching builds oral language skills through games, songs, and hands-on activities, and introduces reading and writing skills when age appropriate. If you choose to enroll your child, at the beginning of the program, you will be given a class schedule, a parent handbook and the phone number of your child’s foreign language teacher. Students will receive workbooks and CD’s on the first day of class. Each student will receive a progress report from his/her teacher mid- way through the program and at the end of it. You will be invited to two open-houses during the school year, but are welcome to visit in the classroom at any time. The program is managed by our PTA Global Language chairs.
