LYON /PLEASANT RIDGE PTA MINUTES

September 13, 2005

I. Welcome - Chris welcomed all members old and new. She encouraged participation at all meetings for voting purposes. Binders were distributed to all board members.

II. Secretary’s Report - Both sets of June minutes were approved, seconded and passed.

III. Treasurer’s Report - Year end of 2004/2005 was June 30th. There is a deposit form and check request form in the binders. The new 2005 budget included $15,000 for the wireless initiative. We tried to make this year’s budget break even. Cultural enrichment is changed to $13,000 to cover the all school field trip and $1,000 was added to global language. There should be another $1,200 added to the benefit for picture sales. There should be another $1,900 for last week - check budget for missing revenues. All of 2004/2005 wish list items have been paid out. A new wish list will be done in the spring. We will be merging our three bank accounts into one at the Glenview State Bank. A vote was taken to approve, seconded and approved.

IV. Principal’s Report -

Pleasant Ridge - Rosemary Lorenzo
NWEA testing has begun - last week was reading, this week is math and next week is language. Curriculum night is Thursday September 15 th at 7 p.m. Picture day is September 23 rd. Enrollment is 19 sections and a total of 472 students. Pleasant Ridge is having emergency drills - fire, bus and lockdown.

Lyon - Dave Work
New staff - there are three new first grade teachers - Sara Duckwall, Jennifer Licato, and Kristen Wilson. Second grade - Liz Michalowicz, and Jennifer Schmidt is the new psychologist. Wireless Initiative - over the summer months Lyon school was set up for wireless technology. Brian Engle, Sue Raben and Mr. Work brought over 4 laptops last week. This project will be done incrementally to get teachers comfortable and trained before Thanksgiving. Each staff member will be required to do a project on the laptop. Some teachers will visit other K-2 buildings to get laptop ideas. Some children will begin to use them to get feedback and recognize difficulties. We are looking to get a cart in late February/early March so they can be used in the classrooms. We are the first of the primary schools in the district to do this.

Friday, September 16 th is red, white and blue day. There is a national mandate that on September 17 th all students will be taught about the Constitution. Red white and blue day is also a chance to recognize the victims of hurricane Katrina and 911. Information is being broadcast on WLYON. There will be a flag-raising and assembly to kick off the hurricane relief program. All students should wear red, white and blue.

Picture day is September 29 th.

Every three years there is an all school field trip to a live performance. Asking PTA to cover all or some of the cost (a little over $3,000 for every student and staff member) to see Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar at Centre East on January 19 th at 10 am. There is no bus fee in this contract.

Linda Hannekamp is out for heath issues - the office is a few steps behind.

Teacher Representative - Debbie Shefren
Teachers are currently administering the ISIL test to each student individually.

VI. President’s Report - Thank you to all - introduction of all members.
Play for Life - Mary Ann Topping - Springman/Attea initiative for play equipment - Trying to raise $225,000 to cover identical play areas at both schools - student input has been done. Currently have about $30,000. Wristbands are being sold, mailers have been sent soliciting donations. October 6 th fundraiser - Barbara Rinella at Sunset Ridge C.C. - $75 per person. Asking for a donation from our PTA to be equally divided between Attea and Springman. We will vote on thie issue next month.

VII. Chair Reports

1 st Vice President - requests each board position to check the mail folder. Emergency notification lists are being completed.

2 nd Vice President - No report

3 rd Vice President - Thank you to room mom volunteers. The local school council will meet in October - looking for a non PTA parent volunteer.

4 th Vice President - Eileen thanks all PR room parents . A 5 th grade picnic chair committee has been formed. Mary Lou McDonagh, Sharon Mann, Theresa Drouillard, Betty DuPree, and Lisa Dickholtz.

Ways and Means - Lyons - Thank you to all parent volunteers who helped distribute school supplies. We were able to purchase 29 supply kits for free/reduced lunch children. (PR) - If you would like something submitted to the newsletter send it to prreview@glenview34.org. Spirit wear is still for sale. Considering combining school supplies and art supplies into one order for next year. A motion was made, seconded and approved. The committee will meet to discuss delivery methods and teacher needs.

Cultural Enrichment - PR had an inspirational handicapped (differently abled) speaker named Matt Glowacki. He will be at LY on Sept. 21 st at 10:25 and 1:30. LY and PR representatives went to showcase to select new assemblies.

Art Enrichment - LY and PR are working with each classroom to identify parent volunteers.

Bookfair - LY - Looking for volunteers for November 15 th and 16 th.

Global Language - There are 61 students from Lyon and 136 from PR. Teacher salaries went up a bit. The Lyon program started this week and PR will begin next week.

Benefit - Kristina Hourihane is considering Kohl’s Childrens Museum as the location for the benefit - possible dates are Febr 11 th or 26 th. The board made a motion, seconded and approved having the benefit at Kohl Children’s Museum on February 11 th, 2006.

Pumpkinfest - will be held October 22 nd from 10-2 pm at Lyon School. All main chair positions have been filled - still seeking volunteers. All room moms should sent curriculum night sign up sheets to the PTA box at school.

District - Brett Clark - Parents in Partnership is scheduled for October 22 nd. The keynote speaker is Stedman Graham ( 9 am). We give Parents in Partnership $1,000 annually towards speakers.

NSSED - Articles will be published in both newsletters. Staff in-services over the summer spoke to disability awareness. All ELS students will be included in the directory, pumpkinfest, etc.

Directory - Connie Nash and Brett will double check that all ELS students are included. Target date is early October distribution.

Volunteers - PR - Lisa Dickholtz - thank you to all parents who are volunteering at the school store. Check all deadline dates if you want things to appear in the newsletter.

Publishing Center - Looking for someone to take over this position.
